Confederation Trail
When the PEI railway was abandoned in 1989, Islanders were quick to notice a unique opportunity. The idea of a tip-to-tip shared –use walking and cycling trail was born. The total length of the Confederation Trail is 435 km.
In 1864 the Charlottetown Conference from the colonies of British North America was held in Charlottetown to discuss a Canadian Confederation, which actually resulted in the founding of the Dominion of Canada. PEI has thus been known as the “Cradle of Confederation,” even though it did not finally join the union until 1873.
National Park beaches
The beautiful red-sand beaches of PEI National Park are perfect for families. Kids love playing on the soft sand beaches and parents enjoy walking along the beach and admiring the red sandstone cliffs. Many beaches are supervised from 10am to 6pm during the summer and surf conditions are always posted.
